Salem is the eldest child to Arthur and Margaret Young, and the older brother to Hannah Young. As a boy, he spent much of his time reading and learning - in-taking as much knowledge as his mind could possibly hold. He adored his mother and often went picking for blackberries with her and helped brew her chamomile tea to aid her in sleeping. His father had high hopes of him joining him in the butchering business, but Salem had other things in mind. He fancied the arts more than anything.
Unfortunately, when he was eighteen, a fire erupted in his family's house while everyone was sleeping and the home burned down. Salem barely made it out alive, with severe burns across the majority of his body. As he lay dying in the cold, a stranger approached him. He thought for a mere second that this man might save him or his family, but instead the man tore into his throat with sharp fangs and killed the boy.
Raziel introduced Salem to the life of a vampire after Siring him that fateful night. He told the boy that he saw a mysterious girl in his future [upon biting a human, the vampire witnesses glimpses of the past, present and future of their victim] in a place unfamiliar to him - Colorado. The idea bothered Salem constantly, wondering who this girl was, when they would meet and how when he was trapped in a tiny boarded up building with the man who turned him into a monster.
Salem refused to drink the blood of humans, despite his Sire's constant insistence that he would die without it. He became frail and bitter, begging Raziel to put him out of his misery. His Sire had told him on numerous occasions that if a vampire entered the sunlight, they would burn to death - and Salem decided that rather than waste away with Raziel, he would end himself and his misery. He had no family, no friends, nothing - what was stopping him?
Stepping into the light, however, proved useless. He felt no pain, no burning, not a single dire effect. He spent years upon years traveling the world until he finally reached America and decided that he would follow the vision of his Sire and wait until he finally met the girl in his future.
Salem meets Alexis Hobbs in 2012 during a chance encounter after a vampiric acquaintance of his requests that he deliver a letter to her from his mortal-girlfriend Janet, who happens to be Alexis's mother. Upon meeting the girl, he discovers that this is the girl from Raziel's vision and he desires nothing more than to learn about her, accompany her - even in the fight against his own kind, whom he hates - and eventually fall in love with her, as he believes they are meant to be - twin souls, destined to be together.
