Alexis is just your ordinary high school student. She is intelligent but has trouble focusing on her school work and gets barely passing grades despite her potential for so much more. Her favorite thing to do is play the piano, although she doesn't believe she is skilled enough to have a profession in the music industry. 

Her mother and father are Janet and Desmond Hobbs. Janet worked at the local zoo in Willowshire, Colorado until her boyfriend Mark offered her a job at the Denver Zoo. Desmond abandoned the family when Alexis was only six-years-old and caused her to fall into a deep state of depression and she lost interest in most of her hobbies, including hanging out with her best friends Jason and Karen. 

Upon turning eighteen, Alexis discovers that Janet and Desmond are in fact not her parents. The man who has been posing as her Uncle Paul for the past eighteen years is her real father. He set her up for adoption after his wife passed away and had the foster family promise that he could remain a part of the "family" in any way at all. Janet later decides to relocate to Denver, leaving the family house in Alexis's name and provides her with enough funds to last a few months. She also directs a young man named Salem, who is acquainted with Mark, to Alex in order to explain why she left and who Paul truly is. Alexis is devastated at the news Salem reveals to her. Furthermore, Paul delivers some even more troubling news to her about her real family. She comes from a line of vampire hunters, and Salem just so happens to be a one hundred and twenty-seven year old vampire. Fortunately for both of them, he has no interest in human blood and hasn't tasted a single drop since becoming a vampire. Paul teaches her in the ways of hunting and she is a natural at it. After Paul insisted that Mr. and Mrs. Hobbs put Alexis through gymnastics and martial arts as a child she had plenty of experience in flexibility and fighting. Unfortunately, things aren't all that they seem - Alexis is more than just an ordinary hunter.
