One night at the saloon, Thomas meets a beautiful young woman named Margaret and they spend the night chatting. Over the course of a month he begins to fall in love with her. Unbeknownst to him at the time, she is a married woman. After a night of passion shared between the two, Margaret confesses that she has committed an affair on her husband and runs away, saying that she never intends to speak to Thomas again.

Torn at the idea that the love of his life is a married woman, Thomas becomes even more involved in drinking. Margaret never visits the saloon again, but Thomas is delivered a note from her entailing that she is with child and there is no doubt in her mind that he is the father. He hopes that this changes her mind and that they can be together, however she refuses to leave her husband or her son.

Thomas visits his daughter, Hannah, regularly at night but tells her that his name is Daniel so that Margaret won't know it is him. Margaret is convinced that the girl has created an imaginary friend and attempts to ignore her constant insistence that he is real.

Margaret eventually learns of 'Daniel's' true identity and demands that he discontinue his visits but he refuses to listen.

One drunken night while Thomas is reading the old letter from Margaret, he is approached by a strange woman who promises to take away his pain. She bites into his throat and a sudden realization washes over Thomas - he is going to die this night. He begged the woman to put him out of his misery, and as she prepared to do just that she is distracted by a noise and leaves the man bleeding in an alley.

After that night, Thomas becomes a member of the undead - a vampire - but he still continues to visit his daughter despite the urges he feels to drink her blood.

During one particular visit to the house, he witnesses Margaret arguing with her husband after confessing what she has done. Thomas feels no relief as he watches the husband strike his wife across the face.

The following night Thomas visits Hannah in her bedroom, only to discover that the house has caught fire. He steals Hannah out of her bed then realizes her older half-brother is laying on the floor to keep her company after a nightmare she had. He ignores the boy and flees from the house, only to return a while later to save the girl's half-brother.
